Poetry That Moves the Soul: ‘Instructions Before Visiting Earth’ by James McCrae

Intuition can be found in the most unexpected ways. Writing is a resource to consider, even if it was never your strong suit.
I've been writing frequently these days. What started as a hobby has turned into a deeper exploration driven by an inner motivation.
Writing wasn't always my forte. In fact, I used to find it quite daunting and intimidating.
Previous experiences had wiped out any notion of passion for it. My creative writing teacher, whom I'll refer to as Mrs. H, was downright brutal.
Grammar, spelling and punctuation were the focus rather than creative exploration through storytelling.
I so wish she had cast a light on just that, storytelling, sharing of ideas rather than scribbling across my stories with red ink. How I wished she offered encouragement or shared a few stories of her own.
Writing notes, journaling and even poetry were inspired through my mother's passing in 2003. The gift of a calligraphy set from a friend set it in motion. Divine timing and a new muse to explore: grief, grieving and moving forward with it all.
It's one of the ways I talked with my mother, loved ones, and channeled guidance. It's where I found other ways to stream creative inspiration. It's a practice I continue to this day almost on a daily basis.
Whether it's a short journal entry, a story idea, a poem or a lyric, the creative muse is within us all. Stories. Stories of our lives, arriving through imagination or in witness of others in their own moment.
Creativity is a way back to what truly matters to the heart — a reminder that everything is fragile and temporary, and that clinging to what cannot last comes at great cost to ourselves and others.
I arrived at this poem I'm about to share at a time that was truly quite timely. It reminded me of what IS possible rather than what ISN'T.
Thank goodness for creativity and those who share in spite of fear or doubt.
Thank goodness for creativity and all that it inspires.
At the very least it may bring awareness, hope, encouragement and belief that creative expression is alive and well.
Let's cheer on the inspiration and transformative power of letters, words, sentences, stories, and language that bring about positive change.
And a reminder of our higher purpose during a time when the world feels out of touch and a bit crazy.
The poem below, is by contemporary author and poet James McCrae,
who reminds us that we are visitors on this earth.
We are here to nurture and preserve the blessings given to us, starting with ourselves and reaching out to our families, friends, communities, and the broader natural world.
INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE VISITING EARTH
In the event that you wake up and
find your soul separated from source
and manifest into material form, don’t panic.
Your condition is only temporary.
You have been selected for the
opportunity of human incarnation.
This 3D simulation is designed to break up
the monotony of eternity by giving you a fully
immersive experience as a distinct ego identity.
Your body will serve as your physical avatar as you
navigate a dense and dramatic reality.
There will be many distractions causing you to
forget your true nature and origin.
You will experience a range of emotions,
from joy to loneliness to despair.
But remember – no matter what trials and
traumas you encounter, your soul remains
perfectly safe.
At times you may feel lost or afraid.
This is totally normal.
If you ever need guidance,
simply slow down your busy mind and bring your
awareness to the quiet place inside yourself.
On this planet, nothing is permanent.
People and things will come and go.
You will fall in love and form sentimental attachments
only to lose everything you hold dear.
So cling to nothing too tightly, even yourself,
and when it’s time to let go, let go with grace,
for nothing is owned, only borrowed.
As you walk among the people on the planet,
try to be a good guest.
Tread lightly. Remember that you are only visiting.
Don’t make a mess. Listen more than you speak .Give more than you take.
Don’t keep your soft heart locked inside a glass cage,
protected from wear and tear.
I could read this poem over and over. It's meaning holding
a greater light to where our focus should be and where it shouldn't be.
Enjoy the richness and depths of this poem.
Pay attention to which part you're drawn to.
There's always something that draws us in to experience
in a greater way.
