When the Turtle Spirit Calls: Animal Totem, Symbolism, and the Wisdom of Slowing Down, By Christie Flynn

Have you ever felt like the pace of life just isn’t matching your natural rhythm?

Maybe you're moving too fast, chasing deadlines, trying to keep up with it all—Or perhaps, everything feels stalled and uncertain.

Is it too fast and overwhelming?

This is often associated with burning out, similar to the reference of burning the candle at both ends. An idiom that means working or doing things so intensely that one sacrifices sleep and rest, leading to exhaustion. It implies a hectic lifestyle, characterized by constant busyness, pushing oneself to the limit, and often staying up late and waking up early.

When that happens, I often look to nature—and lately, the turtle has been calling.

Honoring a pace of energy that supports you and your way of life is important.

Take a moment to pause.

When the Turtle Spirit shows up, it’s often a gentle nudge to slow down, ground yourself, and trust the pace of your life. In this blog, I share the deeper symbolism of the turtle as a spirit animal and totem—offering insights around patience, protection, and emotional awareness.

Whether it’s been appearing in your dreams, through art, or in everyday life, the turtle may be showing up for a reason. We explore how animal energies reflect your inner rhythm, and how paying attention to these subtle signs can help you reconnect with your intuition, values, and the steady unfolding of your journey.

The turtle is more than just a gentle presence in the animal kingdom.

It brings with it a deep healing, symbolizing steady movement, longevity, wisdom, and self-protection.

If you’ve felt drawn to the turtle lately, in dreams, art, or even as a random symbol popping into your day…

That's a sign, a signal to pause for a moment of time.

It might just be trying to tell you something.

Take a moment to ask yourself a few questions:

  • Where am I rushing through life?

  • What am I trying to force that isn’t quite ready yet?

  • Where could I honor a slower, more sustainable pace?

When the turtle appears, it often arrives when we’re being asked to re-evaluate our current values—what we believe, how we’re living, and what needs to shift.

A Quick Walk Through My Space…

As I sit at my desk writing this, I glance around my office.

A turtle carving rests quietly on the windowsill.

There’s a loon sculpture on the side table.

A crystal bird on the shelf.

A mug with a moose.

A toy dog from a recent trip.

Another wooden turtle was tucked in a basket on top of the dresser.

All of them speak to me. Each one holds a story, an energy, and a message that resonates with a part of me.

The bird holds special significance, especially because a red bird appeared at my window many times while I was doing the dishes during the early weeks and months after my mother's passing (she died in 2003 from cancer). I quickly learned that the red bird was a cardinal. I know its song, and it speaks to my heart. Over time, I realized that this is a common symbol, signal, or greeting from the other side, or, as I like to think of it, my mom talking to me differently.

Back to you, and the brilliantly strong and wise turtle.

Not surprisingly, the turtle keeps showing up—in dreams, on walks, in gifts from friends.

Spirit speaks to us in whispers and nudges. It doesn't have to be loud for you to notice. You may need to slow down, though, to catch it. I call it "Catching Light."

And animals, often, are the best messengers.

Zooming out to the bigger perspective.

Turtle Island and the Sacred Story

The turtle doesn’t just appear in symbols—it’s deeply woven into ancestral knowledge and sacred stories.

Many Indigenous Nations across North and Central America refer to this land as Turtle Island. It's a name rooted in creation stories, where the Earth is formed on the back of a great turtle, who offers stability, foundation, and sacred ground.

The story I've been told is that a woman, often referred to as Sky Woman, falls from the Skyworld and lands on a turtle's back, which then becomes Turtle Island, the landmass that would later become North America.

I first read this story in the book titled Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. She's a beautiful writer and teacher. It's one of my favorite books that I read over and over.

Turtle Island isn’t just a story.

It’s a reminder of our connection to the Earth, our responsibility to protect her, and the wisdom that has existed long before us. It’s about sustainability, stewardship, and sacred belonging.

What can you do to protect our Earth? Perhaps reducing plastic in our waterways by reusing plastic items in your purchases. Buy items from second-hand stores. Do what you can.

The Symbolism of the Turtle: What It Might Mean for You

Turtles, uniting together. Nature often shows us what we need for ourselves.

If the turtle spirit is showing up for you lately, here’s what it may be encouraging you to explore:

  • Pace Yourself: Are you racing through life? Or resisting momentum altogether?

The turtle asks you to tune in and honor your natural rhythm, not the one the world insists you follow.

  • Ground Yourself: The turtle’s shell offers protection. It reminds us to create safety, not just physically, but emotionally and energetically.

  • Protect Your Energy: You get to decide who and what gets access to your energy. The turtle shows us how to carry our boundaries with grace.

  • Practice Patience: Transformation doesn’t happen overnight. Like the turtle shedding its shell, or scutes. It takes time to evolve. I call it becoming.

Much like we shed the older version of ourselves over time, growth can be uncomfortable, slow, and deeply necessary.

    Reconnect with Your Inner Wisdom:

The turtle carries ancient energy and timeless truth. You already hold the answers—you need to slow down long enough to hear them.

Dreaming of Turtles, or Feeling "Behind"?

If you’ve been dreaming of turtles or feeling like you're “behind” in life, it may be your intuition nudging you to take a step back and breathe.

The path you’re on doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

Progress isn’t linear.

Sometimes it's pretty abstract. It may feel disjointed or all over the place, but it's like wandering on purpose.

Never lost. You're figuring it out... use curiosity. It's an excellent vehicle for creation.

And just because you’re not moving quickly doesn’t mean you’re not moving forward.

“I’m like an old turtle these days. I don’t run wide-open everywhere, but at the end of the day, I’ll be where I’m supposed to be.” – Tracy Lawrence.

The Takeaway: The Turtle’s Message for You

The turtle reminds you to:

  • Find your own rhythm. It's okay to be different, because everyone else is taken ;-)

  • Be present with where you are.

  • Honor the unfolding.

  • Trust the journey.

Sometimes, the world tells us faster is better—do more, be more, hustle harder. But the turtle tells a different story—one of patience, intention, grounded truth, and divine timing.

You don’t have to rush. You have to keep showing up.

Reflect & Explore

  • What animal symbols have been showing up in your life lately?

  • What do they represent for you?

  • Where can you honor your energy more fully at this moment?

Take a look around where you are right now, or walk through your home.

Notice the art, the keepsakes, and the nature around you.

What stands out to you right now?

Spirit has a way of speaking through the everyday.

I encourage you to pay attention to how those nudges may be showing up for you.

It could be the 'Shoulds...'

I should pay more attention to ...

I should call ....

I should share my idea ...

I should ...

The answers we need are within us. - Christie Flynn

Notice the 'pop' of ideas, or "out of the blue' thoughts that direct you

in a particular direction.

Maybe the ideas float in during a morning shower or

a quiet moment, drinking your favorite drink. (I love to make myself a cup of coffee and sit in my meditation chair for a moment of reflection, contemplation, and quiet stillness.)

I often find many benefits from a regular practice of meditation, or as I like to call it,

our 'natural state of being.' We've just become accustomed to the busyness of modern society. However, if you examine other countries, such as Finland, which adopted a four-day workweek, it has had a significant impact on the country's health and productivity.

To "be" or settle ourselves down with a slower pace or deeper pace of breathing, it helps to

facilitate and cultivate moments of insight, inspiration, and renewal.

Final Thoughts: Trust the Turtle Within

The turtle reminds us that life isn’t a race—it’s a journey meant to be experienced with presence, patience, and a sense of purpose.

If you’ve been questioning your pace or feeling out of alignment, take it as a loving invitation to slow down and tune in.

The signs, symbols, and spirit animals around you aren’t random—they’re guiding you back to yourself.

Wherever you are right now is exactly where you’re meant to be.

Keep showing up. Keep trusting your own rhythm.

And remember: you don’t have to rush to get to where you want to be.

That's where mindfulness comes into play, which is about presence within

what you are doing, creating, and forming for this world. Nurturing your gifts and sharing them along the way.

To get out there and share authentically at a pace that's natural to you.

It's essential to be yourself and embrace your differences with pride.

Let the turtle lead you home to your steady, grounded self.

Sit with that for a moment.

Breathe that in.
